I had this huge long post in the process, but I had to scrap it because things have changed.
I just got an official job offer from the company with the same-sex benefits. They want me to start ASAP.
The other company that pays BIG bucks has me at the top of their list and wants to hire me, but must wait until the CEO comes back into town at the beginning of August to make an official decision.
Because my friend works for the company with the same-sex benefits, I cannot just take it for a couple of weeks and see what happens with the big bucks job. If I left, she would look bad, and I cannot do that to a friend.
And, I am trying to decide if I should counter for more money with the official job offer. They told me the range when I interviewed, and offered the top of the range…but I think I am worth more. But I have never countered before. I don’t really even know how.

I can’t believe how quickly all this happened. A week ago you were pondering whether or not to leave, and now you have 2 job offers.

Yes, I know that’s not what your post is really about. I’d say to go for whichever one you think you’ll enjoy most as long as you can live off what you’re making. I’d rather be poor and like my job then rich and hate it.
Anyway, congrats again.

Yes, they are both in the Dallas area.
Problem is, the positions are very comparable in their duties. I think I would enjoy both.
Company 1 - Large, national, growing, room to advance, gay-friendly, friend works there, decent pay, start ASAP
Company 2 - Small (under 20 people), I think they are about to explode and I would get extra money if/when they went public, longer drive, not sure if they are gay friend but I don’t *have* to be out at work, really awesome people, friendly geeks as employees, more personal touch, $10-20k more a year than Company 1, have to wait, not a 100% sure thing
If they both offered today, I would prolly pick number 2. But I don’t know if I can wait. I am sooo ready to get out of here.
See why this is hard? /sigh

Were I in your shoes, I’d inquire as to how long the offer letter is good, and explain I have a few other pendings in process that should be wrapped up at the start of August. I’d further say that I am still very much interested in working for them, but I want time to evaluate all offers, based on location (it’s a known that you’re relocating, and not horribly familiar with traffic patterns, and where will you live??), compensation, and career growth opportunities.
If they’re really that excited about you working for them, and they find out you have other offers you’re considering, there’s a chance (not a guarantee) that they might throw more money at you. Of course, there’s a chance, tho highly unlikely, that they’d renege their offer. If that happens, I’m not sure what grounds of recourse you’d have (texas is an at-will state).
And, not that I”m biased, but Plano isn’t a bad area to live in *wink*.

Yep it is hard. If it was easy everyone would b edoing it. I am sure that a few years ago there were thousands upon thousands of people flcoking to small comanies with the thoughts that they were going to explode and also the lure of great money at an IPO and loads of options. Today well call these people unemployed.
Don’t get me wrong $10-20k is a load of money (~$6-11k after taxes or $250-500/ pay period if you get paid twice a month) But now weigh benefits packages, not to mention the benefit of it is is a solid offer and not something where you are waiting for someone to give you thumbs up, becasue who knows you may pass on #1 and #2 goes a separate direction and then you are left without anything.
I would defeintely ask about relocation expenses, and as an exercise just sit down and make a list of all the things you would like to get froma company as compensation. Don’t worry about it being too far-fetched or improbably sounding, just write it down. Think about things like 3-4 weeks of paid vacation a year, window office, health club membership, business expense account, company car, transitional housing while you look for a place of your own, ability to work from home (and also budget to get internet connection and equipment to work from home) Just brainstorm and get tham all down on paper.
There are things that you can ask for other than a pay raise. Don’t forget to remind them that they are getting a superstar employee with lots to offer and that a little extra on their part will go a long way. This is their opportunity to have them tell you why you should select thier company to work for.

That’s awesome, congrats.
I’d just tell company 1 that you have another offer with more money, and can they meet that price. Say it nicely, tell them what it is about thier offer that you like, and what they can do to improve it.
I’ve always done that, never worked (Always minimum wage flunkie jobs), but I never get turned down because of it.

Nail bitin’. I hate these sort of dilemmas, but yah, say you have another offer with more money, etc. In a nice way. You could also say the benefits of the lower paying are a definite draw to give ‘em a sop. Portray yourself as teeterin’ precariously between the two options, only topplin’ over by the smell of additional cash. :p
(Btw, actual money is disgustin’ stuff, which I’m sure doesn’t really smell too good and I’m damned sure not going to make the experiment. But then there’s the things it buys..)
And if it doesn’t work, you can drop my name and I’ll call and get all official on ‘em for you. :p Eh, at least I’m a doctah!
