A Sneak Peak Into My Crazy Life as I Try to Get Through Nursing School,
and the Technology, Books, Movies, Music & Lyrics I Enjoy
, , and anybody else I missed who likes this song…
Between not wanting to say goodbye and dealing with the frost, I was running a little late this morning. I am SO glad! Gavin DeGraw was on one of the local morning shows. A lady called in and asked him to play “that Hallelujah song you always play at the end of a show.”
Let me just say – Wow. Has anyone else heard Gavin’s version? Does anyone HAVE Gavin’s version?
I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Maybe I have been here before
I know this room, I’ve walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
There was a time you let me know
What’s real and going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dark was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Maybe there’s a God above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
And it’s not a cry you can hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
- Leonard Cohen

Hrm… actually, I think I like the verses of the one on the Essential Cohen cd better. I italisized my favorite verse.
I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
It goes like this: the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I don’t even know the name
But if I did, well really, what’s it to you?
There’s a blaze of light in every word
It doesn’t matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
I did my best; it wasn’t much.
I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch
I told the truth; I didn’t come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I’ll stand before The Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
These verses give me more of a feeling of hope and peace than the ones on the version you heard. Especially that third verse… I mean, could there be a more poetic and beautiful way of saying that God is everywhere, in every pleasure and every pain and every word?
But yeah, now that I know it’s not just a Leonard Cohen song, but it’s been done by others and added to, I’m gonna look it up and see what else I can find out about it. It really is the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard.

I did a Google search for lyrics and used the first ones I came up with. OoO - I think yours was the right version because I remember this line: But if I did, well really, what’s it to you? He didn’t sing the whole song on the radio - he was just playing parts of them. Now I’ll have to go see if I can find the exact lyrics to his version.

So who’s this Gavin dude?

I like Rufus Wainwright’s version. Mmm.

Gavin DeGraw sings I Don’t Want To Be:
I don’t need to be anything other than a prison guard’s son
I don’t need to be anything other than a specialist’s son
I don’t have to be anyone other than the birth of two souls in one
Part of where I’m going is knowing where I’m coming from
(Chorus)
I don’t want to be anything other than what I’ve been trying to be lately
All I have to do is think of me and I have peace of mind
I’m tired of looking ‘round rooms wondering what I gotta do
Or who I’m supposed to be
I don’t want to be anything other than me
I’m surrounded by liars everywhere I turn
I’m surrounded by imposters everywhere I turn
I’m surrounded by identity crisis everywhere I turn
Am I the only one to notice?
I can’t be the only one who’s learned
Can I have everyone’s attention please
If you’re not like this and that
You’re gonna have to leave
I came from the mountain, the crust of creation
My whole situation made from clay to stone
And now I’m telling everybody
If you listen to any pop station, I’m sure you’ve heard it.

Other than the bit Gavin did today, I’ve only heard the one on Shrek. That is the version you like, right?

*Googles*
Yep, that was Rufus’s. I didn’t know it was on the Shrek soundtrack, though, ’til now.

Actually, I don’t listen to any pop station. I don’t think I’ve heard it. *shrug*

The one that was in the movie wasn’t Rufus’ version, but his might be on the soundtrack.
I really like Rufus, and I think I would like his version if I hadn’t heard any other, but I just don’t feel his. The Leonard Cohen version is great (of course, it’s his song), but the Jeff Buckley version is phenomenal.

Oh. Well. He did Hallelujah with just him singing and playing the piano. I love simple songs like that.

Cool, I like that too. Some of the best songs are just one person and a single instrument.

The Rufus version was on an episode of West Wing as well

….I like this song too and have 3 versions:
Rufus Waitwright
Jeff Buckley
and
Gavin DeGraw
