Can You Hear Me Now?

Egads! Where’s the time gone?

Yes, yes. I’m still alive and I have been trying to keep up with my friend’s list. I started my new job last week and things are going…okay. I’m the first person in this position, and so I don’t have a job description. This also means they don’t really have a specific idea of things for me to do. When I ask for direction, I’m told to “become an expert on this software.” Uhm, okay. To make matters worse, my supervisor left for 2 weeks of vacation. While he’s gone, I’m supposed to “get comfortable” with their systems. But, there’s no documentation, no idea of what I’m supposed to do once I’m in the systems. Just…get comfortable.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I love a job that says, “This is what we want done. Here are your resources. Project is due 2 weeks from now.” I think I’m just a little frustrated because I am on 30 days probation, and with my boss out of the country, I still won’t have a good idea of what my job looks like 3 weeks into it. But, I’m trying my best to make it up as I go :)

On the flip side, my boss seems to be as good to work with as I originally thought. My team is a diverse group of guys who are good at what they do. I’ll probably be traveling to Austin near the end of August to meet some more of my team in person. I think things will be great at work once I get a better idea of what I’m supposed to do.

Something else has been keeping me extremely busy lately: His name is Toby. He weighs about 14 pounds and he is around 3 years old. He is a beagle mix that SK and I rescued from the animal shelter last week. He is the sweetest dog! Sadly, he started making these awful noises this weekend. He kept dry heaving. Poor thing! It turns out he has kennel cough. I’m so glad we rescued him because the shelter usually puts down dogs with kennel cough. He is just WAY too adorable. So, poor Toby is keeping SK and I awake hacking and coughing his poor lungs up, but he should be better soon. I have lots of funny dog stories to share, but they will have to wait until later.

Sunday the air conditioner went out and we had to get a new one installed. People who live in Texas without AC are insane.

I’m working on a few different projects during my “spare” time that I will share once they are ready.

How are things in your world?

  3. Going alright. Girlfriend visiting this weekend.

Beginning of a feud with my mother over said girlfriend. Not as good, but deal-able.

Craploads of OT coming my way next week. More money to spend/save in Tejas.

  4. Moved, sprayed for roaches, roaches launched an offensive, moving again and suing current landlord for the couch, chair, and mattress I have to replace. Cable company was a bitch to deal with. Also apparently feeling like the white guy in a Spike Lee movie, only in this case, an Indian Spike Lee movie.

How long were you with the ex? Did your folks meet the ex?

Don’t wear yourself out - but money is nice!

  12. Do you like this vacation as much as the last one?

  13. the set of apartments I’m in is almost exclusively Indian immigrants who are here for a year or two and then move back home. I get the distinct impression I’m not welcome there. I’ve had one person threaten to call the cops on me for doing laundry (although she could have been yelling at a cat), and the downstairs neighbors have this annoying habit of keeping thier door open and slamming it in an annoyed manner when I come home.

  14. ya know, way back when you first got Corbin was when I got a cell phone, so I took a picture of his picture on my computer screen so I’d have something for the phone’s wallpaper. It’s still on my phone. People ask whose dog it is and I reply “some girl in Texas, I’m just too lazy to delete it” I think I also have some of a friend’s cat trapped under a laundry basket.

(The picture was changed a few months later when I got a nice group shot of my buddies in baltimore)

  15. Aye. First visit to Dallas, though I’ve been going up to Tulsa every weekend I could.

Was with the ex for three and a half years. Broke up three months ago. Mother is getting into a psychosis because I’m planning on bringing the new girlfriend home to NJ for a Thanksgiving visit. Really nice and silly.

And Doulbe Aye. Money is nice. And hoping not to wear myself out. If so, then I’ll just be well acquainted with my bed for the Sunday after all the “fun.”

  16. Keen. Reminds me of living in my last apartment, where everyone around me was black, Puerto Rican, or Brazilian/Portuguese. All had great habits of blocking my car in wherever I parked, keeping their music turned up to Eleven, and having their kids toss interesting bits of “Trash.” into my back porch.

  19. Has she ever been to Dallas for any reason? Do you have any big plans while she’s here (that you can discuss ;) )?

Bah. Your mom should be glad you are coming home.

That shift sucks, by the way.

  24. I have no idea. Most said they’re homesick. I think they come here thinking our tech labor market is still booming, and get a little upset that they’re living in cockroach infested apartments and fighting tooth and nail for a job. (Apparently, IBM, the big job source here, fires everyone every few years and has them reapply for thier jobs.)

That or they like to make a crapload of money, then be able to live comfortably in India.

  26. She’s been to the ‘plex for either travel layovers or down to Waxahachie for the Scarborough Faire (Where is where we met this year.) As for big plans? Nothing that can be mentioned in public commentary. :o)

Pretty much that’s the opinion of most folks. She’ll come around eventually.

Yeah… I’ll be getting practice in for the 12-hours next week. Then two weeks after that I get to do them in earnest. Yay.

  27. To be honest I enjoyed the other one more I think. Although this one has had some amazing moments. I’m going to post more when I get home and can put up some pics but some of the key moments:

Chartering 3 floatplanes and taking the group out to some natural hot springs to bath.
Going whale watching and nearly having the boat flipped when a humpback whale decided to pop up 1 meter away from the boat.
Taking a gallop through the woodlands of one of the national parks the name of which escapes me at the moment.

Anyways I could waffle on for ages :) Bottom line though is that I think I will try and get back out on another trip in October if my finances and vacation time will stretch to it.
