Road Trippin’

What do you do when you are alone in your car? Do you crank up your radio and sing along at the top of your lungs? Do you quietly contemplate the cosmos and past decisions? Do you talk on the phone and catch up with friends? Or, do you try to kill yourself?

On my way into Austin, I did it all. (more…)

Watch Out Austin

by @ 1:01 am on . Filed under Entertainment | Life | Texas | Travel

The web developers for my new employer are based out of Austin, so I am heading up there tomorrow to meet everyone. We are in the process of doing a site redesign, so it will be good to be able to sit down and have a discussion in person. I love telecommuting, but being able to sit in the same room and discuss things does have benefits.

I’ve never really gone to Austin to STAY in Austin. Once when I was in college back in the day, I went with some of my tree-huggin’ hippie friends to a political march. To this day, I can’t tell you what I was shouting so enthusiastically about, but I had a grand ole time! Since I was underage, I didn’t get to do much. But - I did get to see the Stevie Ray Vaughn statue.

I’ve also gone to Hippie Hollow a time or two with friends. For those that don’t know, it is the nudist part of Lake Travis. (more…)

Give It Back

by @ 2:52 am on August 30, 2005. Filed under Geek | Health and Wellness | Life | School | Technology

It’s that time of the year again - Back to school. I finished Summer II with an A in my Health and Wellness class. In the last work out session, I actually leg pressed 335 pounds! I felt pretty good about that. Of course, I haven’t worked up a sweat since that last day of class…

I really wanted to go to school full time this fall, but I am only taking 7 hours. I don’t want to overwhlem myself. I’ll be studying American Literature II and an Introduction to Programming class. Reading is fun, but I’m not looking forward to the forced writing. I’m also a little worried about having to learn C. Since both classes are online, it is hard to tell you what I think of the teachers. However, from what I’ve read so far, I’m not impressed.

I still need to go pick up my books. I went by campus and priced them while Jac was in town, but I wanted to shop around online and see if I could find cheap textbooks. I did find the same books, but at basically the same prices so it doesn’t really make any since to pay shipping and wait for them.

I’m glad I’m taking online classes - seeing all the teenyboppers on campus makes me feel…old. I’m only 27 dammit! Where did my childhood go? I want it back!

Safety Nets

There was ice on my windshield this morning. I wanted to run down the street, feeling the crisp air bite at my cheeks and revel in my joy. Do you ever wake up in a fabulous mood and you’re not really sure why? You can guess, suppose, conjecture, presume but in reality, the only conclusion you can really embrace with any certainty is this – Today, my peace fills me to the brim and spills out onto the canvas of my world.

There is a line in Ender’s Game where Ender tells his sister:

“I’ve lived too long with pain. I won’t know who I am without it.”

Game Night and UFC

Let’s see, where was I?

Oh, right. Friday. LAST Friday.

I took Toby to his vet appointment since he wouldn’t put any weight on his leg. The vet took X-rays, but thank goodness nothing appeared to be broken. After I got home and gave him some medicine, I sat down in my chair with the intentions of resting my eyes - for just a minute! You know what they say about intentions … I fell asleep with Toby in my lap. By the time I woke up, it was too late to go out dancing, so we decided to go see Four Brothers instead. It didn’t get the greatest reviews, but I thought it was decent. I wanted more for the ending, but that’s just me and my belief in fairy-tales.

Saturday, we had people over for game night. It was a blast! I’m still getting flack for something I said while we were playing Catchphrase: The clue was Sandy Duncan. Since I didn’t have any idea who she was, I decided to try to break her name down.

“When you go to the beach, it’s that gritty stuff that gets in your parts.”

Seemed like a good clue to me …

Sunday, we watched a lot of Ultimate Fighting. Saturday night during the party, I used Tivo to record UFC - Boiling Point. Man, am I glad I did! It was worth paying the PPV price for it. We also watched the reruns of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, and were able to watch the final fight between Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar again. If you are a fight fan, and missed that fight, you’d best just take yourself out behind the barn and have a nice long pity party. Or, you could bribe me, and I could send you a copy ;)

I hate to disappoint Chumas, but I didn’t get one single picture the entire weekend. I haven’t been very good lately about remembering to get out the camera.

Am I in trouble?
*evil grin*

Blonde Moment

While at the Black-Eyed Pea, I went into the restroom to wash my hands. There was a sign on the paper towel dispenser that was signed, “The PEA.” I thought to myself, “I wonder what PEA stands for? Shouldn’t it be signed BEP?”

Yeah, The Pea. I guess their finger was stuck on the caps lock key. I’m such a dork.

Paradise City

Jac’s back! I picked her up from the airport on Wednesday afternoon, and Thursday we went to NRH2O, a local waterpark. I haven’t been to a waterpark since I was a wee little one, and I forgot how much fun they can be! We spent the day playing on slides, floating around the Endless River and being tossed and turned in the wave pool. It was a great day to go since most of the kids in the area have already started going back to school. Six Flags also had a waterpark in the area called Hurricane Harbor, but we went to the smaller one. I’m glad because we didn’t have to deal with any lines, and it wasn’t very crowded. It was also very affordable. I got a little too much sun, but it sure was fun!

SK and I are trying to convince Jac to move to Dallas. We sound like walking billboards. I think the DFW Chamber of Commerce (if there is such a thing) should put us on their payroll!

I have to take Toby back to the vet today. He won’t put any weight on one of his hind legs, and SK noticed that it is really swollen. I checked to make sure he didn’t have anything stuck between his toes, but I cannot find anything. Poor Toby just cries and looks at me like, “Why are you doing this to me? Don’t you love me any more?”

As for work, I have to try to negotiate my own contract. I’ve never done that before. Gah! Here’s to hoping Google can provide me some answers.

Interview With A Lesbian

by @ 7:10 pm on August 16, 2005. Filed under Blog | Entertainment | Humor | Life | Meme

Since Mike was kind enough to submit to my grueling interview, I thought it only fair that he pick my brain in return.

1. When did you first realize you were a lesbian?

I don’t remember waking up any one day and thinking, “Aha!” I had a “girlfriend” in kindergarten. I always had crushes on women. During most of high school, I had so much personal stuff going on that I didn’t really have sex on the brain like most other teenagers. But, I guess if you must have an answer, I think I was 17 the first time I described myself as a lesbian.

2. How did you meet SK?

At work. She taught my new hire class at the last place I worked. Not knowing if she even dated women, I invited her to lunch to discuss “work stuff.” After several missed opportunities, we finally managed to have an hour free at the same time. During lunch, I discovered she liked Indigo Girls. They happened to be playing in town that evening. I invited her, and she said that she wanted to go, but really shouldn’t. I said, “C’mon! You know you wanna!” She admitted she did, and the rest is history! (Notice the name of the blog? ;) )

Don’t interpret the above two questions as chauvinistic, straight-guy-wants-the-juicy-details examinations. I really am genuinely fascinated by the first question, and you speak with an adoration for SK that’s rare even among most hetero-couples I know.

(and no, I didn’t take it that way at all!)

3. Are you a morning person or a night person?

I always thought I should have been born on the other side of the world, since I am just getting started as the sun goes down.

4. What’s your favorite movie?

The Princess Bride, Sound of Music, Beaches
“Are there rocks ahead?”
“If there are, we’ll soon be dead.”

5. What’s your favorite game show? (Don’t say “Press Your Luck,” or I’ll probably fall helplessly in love with you.)

I don’t want to break your heart, but it must be old school Press Your Luck. None of that new-fangled stuff! I also like Lingo, Bumper Stumpers and The Price Is Right.

Thanks for the great questions, Mike!

I also did this meme in my LJ last summer. It is funny to read the answers from a year ago, and see where I am now.

Poor, Unfortunate Soul

by @ 11:55 am on August 15, 2005. Filed under Life | School

I really need to become a more organized person. I tell myself this all the time, and yet it never fails: My payments are always a couple of days late, I forget about an appointment or I miss a birthday. Looking at my credit history, it looks the worst during the time I made the most money compared to the bills I had to pay. But, for some strange reason, I just couldn’t seem to pay them on time. I’d hear this voice in the back of my head saying, “Your VISA bill is due soon,” and I’d reply, “Sure, sure. ‘Soon.’ I have the money; I will take care of it later.” But later, I’d ignore my internal bill-pay clock and the payment would be late again.

I always knew it’d get me in trouble some day.
