Interview With A Lesbian

by @ 7:10 pm on August 16, 2005. Filed under Blog | Entertainment | Humor | Life | Meme

Since Mike was kind enough to submit to my grueling interview, I thought it only fair that he pick my brain in return.

1. When did you first realize you were a lesbian?

I don’t remember waking up any one day and thinking, “Aha!” I had a “girlfriend” in kindergarten. I always had crushes on women. During most of high school, I had so much personal stuff going on that I didn’t really have sex on the brain like most other teenagers. But, I guess if you must have an answer, I think I was 17 the first time I described myself as a lesbian.

2. How did you meet SK?

At work. She taught my new hire class at the last place I worked. Not knowing if she even dated women, I invited her to lunch to discuss “work stuff.” After several missed opportunities, we finally managed to have an hour free at the same time. During lunch, I discovered she liked Indigo Girls. They happened to be playing in town that evening. I invited her, and she said that she wanted to go, but really shouldn’t. I said, “C’mon! You know you wanna!” She admitted she did, and the rest is history! (Notice the name of the blog? ;) )

Don’t interpret the above two questions as chauvinistic, straight-guy-wants-the-juicy-details examinations. I really am genuinely fascinated by the first question, and you speak with an adoration for SK that’s rare even among most hetero-couples I know.

(and no, I didn’t take it that way at all!)

3. Are you a morning person or a night person?

I always thought I should have been born on the other side of the world, since I am just getting started as the sun goes down.

4. What’s your favorite movie?

The Princess Bride, Sound of Music, Beaches
“Are there rocks ahead?”
“If there are, we’ll soon be dead.”

5. What’s your favorite game show? (Don’t say “Press Your Luck,” or I’ll probably fall helplessly in love with you.)

I don’t want to break your heart, but it must be old school Press Your Luck. None of that new-fangled stuff! I also like Lingo, Bumper Stumpers and The Price Is Right.

Thanks for the great questions, Mike!

I also did this meme in my LJ last summer. It is funny to read the answers from a year ago, and see where I am now.

Questions from Sichy:

1. Do you remember, specifically, how we met? (At the Nest is not sufficient).

I don’t remember the topic, but I started flirting. Surprise, surprise ;)

2. What are you most looking forward to about your move to Dallas?

My friends - I miss having people around who knew me ‘back in the day.’ People who can tell funny stories about the dumb things I did when I was young. I’ve been really going through this whole ‘I want roots’ phase.

3. In that picture, the one at the bar….was that you in the hat????

In the short hair pictures? Taking the shot? Yep, that’s me, in Chicago for my 21st birthday :) We were at Dick’s Last Resort. The girl lives in Canada. She has a yummy French accent. /drool Some day, maybe I will show you the pics I didn’t post ;) Lemme just tell you this…a Chinese bar filled with Navy men just off the boat and two women dancing together…Interesting times *evil grin*

4. What is your favorite movie of all time?

The Princess Bride, Sound of Music, Beaches
“Are there rocks ahead?”
“If there are, we’ll soon be dead.”

5. So, when the hell are we gonna get together and celebrate our new jobs?????

The plan is before the end of the summer. I need to get moved. At least you won’t be so far away once I get to Dallas :p

Questions from Yarha:
1. How do you handle being hit on by men? What do you say or do in response?

It depends on how they hit on me (meaning are they tacky and gross, or sweet and sincere). If they fall into the first category, I prolly handle it like any woman would, and I knee them in the groin! ;) If they are sweet and sincere, then I’ll usually tell them No thanks. If they have a nice enough smile, and are gracious about the no, I will still dance with them. Could be just because I am a dance whore ;) It’s easier to dance with guys because me being 5’8”, it is hard to find a woman tall enough to spin me. I will rarely tell a guy *why* I am telling him no – In my experience, they tend to just want sex tips from a lesbian when they find out.

2. What’s your favorite version of the Arthurian Legend?

I doubt this is a shocker: The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. I like the different spin she put on things, the way she made me reevaluate the story. It was interesting to learn about motives, and to see things through the eyes of the women. I first read it when I was 10. It is one of those books that I reread at least once a year, if not more often.

3. How did you learn your favorite dance?

A good memory – standing on my dad’s toes when I was 7 years old, two stepping in the living room. An ex taught me how to double two, and a guy friend taught me how to shadow waltz. Pretty much, if I see someone who dances well, I will walk up to them and ask them to teach me. That’s how I learned most if it. I’m fairly good at sweet talking ;)

4. Favorite quote from Princess Bride? (This should be hard as there’s about a jillion of them. :p )

Oh damn. That is a challenge. If I really only get to pick one, it’s prolly this one:

Wesley: Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.

It’s not the one I quote most often, but it is the one that means the most to me.

5. Your most risque item of leather apparel?

*raised eyebrows* Uhm. I have two leather harnesses.

Questions from Andi:
1. How did you come up with the name Jax or Jaxia?

I played MMORPG’s and got tired of seeing the same names everywhere (based on LoTR and such). I wanted something with rare letters – p, q, x, j, z…So I just played around and came up with Jaxia. I liked the way it sounded. Some guy thought it meant something in Chinese and thought I was cool, but I told him I had no idea what he was talking about…

2. Name one fruit in which you just gotta have.

I’m a sucker for fresh, firm GA peaches (no squishy ones). Slice ‘em up and sprinkle a little salt on them – heaven on a plate! Green apples are a VERY close second.

3. What sort of wardrobe style would you say you have?

None. I don’t have just one style. I have leather pants, skimpy dresses, baggy jeans, ball caps, tank tops, kicker jeans, Catholic school girl skirts, cargo pants, Dickie’s overalls, and boring T-shirts. It just depends on what mood I’m in when I get dressed.

4. Do you have a cell phone - if so, what is the ring tone you have programmed on it?

I have custom ring tones for friends I talk to a lot. Those tones fit the people – Trick Pony “Just What I Do”, Moulin Rouge “Lady Marmalade”, Eminem “Real Slim Shady” Rage Against the Machine “Killing in the Name of”. My general ring tone right now is Big and Rich “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy” I change it all the time.

5. Coffee, Tea or… flick-a-my-bic?

Coffee in the morning, with lots of cream and sugar. I like French Vanilla Cappuccino at night, cuddled up with a book in front of the fireplace. Sweet tea with my meals. And Dr Pepper is the best carbonated beverage of all time.

Questions from kitashla
1. When does your new job start?

I changed the day. My last day at my current job is this Friday. I changed the start day for my other job to August 23rd. This gives me a chance to get moved, finish up some other interviews, visit friends and relax a bit. I am still hoping another offer comes through, but if not I will be happy with the job offer I accepted.

2. Are you looking for a serious relationship after this last one, or are you really just looking to have self time punctuated by some casual company from time to time?

Good question. Honestly, I’m not really *looking* for anything. To put it simply, my last relationship was hell and I could really use some time to regroup. It’s been almost a year, but she is still basically a daily part of my life until I move, and so it doesn’t really feel like it has been that long. That said, if Ms. Perfect-for-me knocks on my door, I’m sure not going to slam the door in her face! I know I talk a lot of smack, but I am really no good at the ‘casual company’ thing. Call me corny, but it is hard for me to be with someone if I cannot at least see a future with her.

3. Favourite type of game. And favourite game of that genre. I’m so burnt out on what I’ve got laying around here.

My all time favorite is probably Tetris. Don’t laugh ;p If you get together with friends, pick up Cranium – that game really kicks ass. I haven’t really had the time lately to commit to long games. I play Risk (downloaded, play against the PC), Free cell and Mah Jong to give my brain something to do. I played TTO for a bit with Ana, but had to cancel because I didn’t have the time. Before that, DaoC was the last thing I played.

4. Do you ever plan on having children?

When I was younger, I was told I couldn’t have children, and so I convinced myself that I didn’t want them. Since then, several doctors have told me the first doctor was a quack, and I can. So, I had to do a lot of soul searching. Yes, I do want children. I think I want to have a kid with my genes running around, but I wouldn’t feel like a failure if I never made a little Amy. I’d be fine with adopting or if my gf had a kid.

5. Come on, you really want to give Philez a chance, don’t ya? *grin* (Not with children, just fulfill his hopes and dreams. :)

Eh, I’ve had a few intelligent, gorgeous, and wealthy men offer me everything I could dream of if I would be with them. I don’t hate men, I just can’t see myself ever falling in love with one. Poor Phil.

When I was in HS, I dated a few guys. We’d be making out, and I’d tell myself “If he can just turn me on, then I’ll have sex with him.” It never happened. I’m really not wired that way. I really don’t have any curiosities about what it would be like to be with a man. After the first woman I was with stomped all over my heart, I dated a really great guy in college for a week or two. I didn’t come out to him until much later, and I’m afraid at the time I really hurt and confused him. He had so many awesome qualities, but *something* was missing.

Questions from Chumas:
1. (May be TMI, but if it is, answer alternate - I’ll ask before philez does)
Have you ever been with a man, and are we really that different than women in the sack?
Alt: How many pairs of shoes do you own; and can you name all the styles of said shoes?

No, I haven’t. Sorry, that answer is kinda boring. I messed around with em when I was in HS, but realized they just didn’t do anything for me, so I never went any farther. It’s not really about the skill - I am sure there are guys who can really physically please a woman in bed. For me, it is not about that. A woman’s smile is magic, and, really – name a taste in this world better than that of a woman.

Alt: I have over 40 pair of shoes. I have all kinds…flip flops, sandals, tennis shoes, Docs, strappy heels, cowboy boots, clunky heeled dress boots…You name a style, I probably have it.

2. Pancakes or waffles?

Waffles, with peanut butter and syrup. Or, pancakes with chocolate chips and/or bananas and syrup

3. What do you see in your minds eye when you smell the warm scent of a perfume you associate with love/lust?

As we’ve discussed on the Nest – I am all about scent. A smell evokes very vivid pictures in my mind. I have a hard time dating a woman who wears a popular perfume, because walking down the street…If the wind carries her scent to me, I can picture her…back arched, body flushed, hair splayed out and that look of intense satisfaction across her face…and I melt.

4. Why did you choose this particular career path in your life?

It picked me. From the time I was in 8th grade, I wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon. At the very least, I wanted to be in sports medicine. I needed a job, Microsoft hired me and I turned out to be a good geek. I have the rare combination of people and technical skills that enables me to be successful.

5. When you get Corbin neutered, will you be buying him fake testicular implants so he doesn’t realize anything’s missing?

Lately, I’ve been thinking about not getting him fixed. Because he is solid white, I have had a lot of people want to use him for stud. But, no, if I get him fixed, I won’t get him implants – balls are overrated ;)

Questions from FF
1.Describe the perfect hamburger.

Chili cheese burger, with mustard and jalapenos.

2. Name one thing that you would like to do- but can’t find the nerve to.

Mostly, I do it. I’m one of those people who doesn’t ease into a cold pool. I just jump in, “cold turkey.” But, lately, with my grandma having been sick, I’ve been wishing I had a better relationship with her.

3. Do you have any personal heroes?

I kinda answered this one somewhere else, so forgive the cut and paste: My little sister. We had a rough life, but she has two adorable little boys that she treats like gods. She loves her husband and is making a difference in the lives of those around her. I admire her because the experts say that abuse is a cycle. She said ‘No way’ and it stopped with her.

4. What do you consider your biggest accomplishment?

I’m still alive and doing alright. For the longest time, I didn’t think I’d live to see 18. Most people who grew up in my neck of the woods are in jail or dead.

5. A) What would you do-hoo-oo for a Klondike bar?

I don’t like them, so not much :p

B) How may licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop?

One. Two-hoo! Three. *crunch* Three. No, seriously…247. What can I say, I’m one of those people who wants to know. A few of my friends and I sat down and counted one time. We averaged all our individual lick results together and came up with 247.

Questions from Kemidra
1) A lot of women would think, from looking at you, that you have it all. Looks, brains, independence. How do you feel about that kind of attitude?

What? They would?

I used to think that this one girl I knew had the perfect life. Until we got drunk one night, and I found out about all the things she hid. I sincerely think I fall somewhere in the middle of the pack, appearance-wise. I know I’m not scary, but neither am I remarkable. I know, I know…confidence is sexy. Dress me up, give me some alcohol and I am confident ;) As for brains…I can hold my own, but I am frustrated that I am more a ‘jack of all trades’ type than a specialist. I guess that is just incentive to go back to school.

2) Would you ever go back in your life and change any one thing? If so, what would it be?

I’ve been through some shit, but all in all, I am proud of the person I am today. Of course, there are things I’d like to work on. Some of the lessons, I wish I could have learned in other ways, but I wouldn’t change the bad, because I might not be the same person I am today if I changed the past. Growing up and looking back, I think there are a few situations in my past that I could have handled someone’s feelings a bit more delicately, but nothing I feel so guilty about that I would risk going back and changing.

3) Who in your life would you say stands out for a special “tribute?” Who’s had the most positive influence and why?

No one person, no. But I had some really awesome teachers throughout school. My calculus teacher my senior year of HS who was awesome but known to be a stickler for the rules – if she said due by 8a, she wouldn’t take a paper at 8:01a. Because of some drama at home, I missed a major project. I was supposed to be in the top of my class, but missing this project would give me an F in her class. She noticed and took me aside later and talked to me. I told her what I could and she gave me more time to turn it in, but the best I could get was an 80 on the project. She was hard, but fair. I wound up with an A in the class and didn’t mess up my ranking. Other things weren’t quite as drastic, just buying me lunch, an extra pat on the back when I was down…little things that make a big difference in the life of a lonely little girl.

4) When you look in the mirror, do you most often see the beauty or the flaws?

The flaws.

5) What about your life do you love the most?

A month or so ago, not too much. Right now, even rain couldn’t spoil my parade! Mostly, I love the fact that I have friends I didn’t talk to for way too long, called out of the blue and they still answered the phone. Sometimes I forget that I do have people who will be there for me.

Questions from Maskedfencer
1. Are you going to let Corbin get his groove on with the ladies or not? It could be a whole side business. Jaxia: Dog Pimp.

I’m still undecided. In the last day or two, I’ve come to the realization that I might not be able to keep him. I’ve been trying to get him to adjust to the living conditions he would have to endure once I moved, and he is just not doing very well. He is still way too much a puppy and high energy. With everything, this is the real damper. I was hoping he could stay at a friend’s mom’s place for awhile, until I had a place I could keep him, but they have too many dogs already. /sad

2. If you ran into me on the street, would you run screaming in the other direction? :p

No. I’d apologize for not looking where I was going!

3. City girl or Country?

Ack! I have to pick? Hmm. I’m a city gal who needs occasional country retreats. After doing the horse farm thing for awhile, I realized that living in the country is a lot more romantic than it sounds.

4. Favorite drink, and how do you make it?

Alcoholic: Malibu Rainbow – Malibu rum, pineapple juice, cranberry juice, orange juice, (sometimes grape juice) and a cherry. I don’t usually order them at bars because I get tired of telling people how to make them.
Non: Banana Malts – French Vanilla ice cream, a bit of milk, a little sugar, vanilla extract, a banana and A LOT of malted.

5. What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever worn in public?

Hmm. Lemme think. Weirdest? I don’t think I’ve ever worn anything that I’d call weird. Outrageous, maybe. But not weird :p

Questions from earmgr
1 - If you could wear one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Nothing. I hate wearing clothes. If I had to pick (and weather permitted), something like those loose, white flowy beach pants and a tank top.

2 - You can be any ocean creature in the world. What would you be and why?

Neptune, a mermaid, a siren? Naa :) I would be a starfish. I’ve always admired their ability to recover from loss and keep going on.

3 - You are in medieval times. What role would you be in, and why do you think you would be in that role?

I would be a knight. I want to save damsels in distress. If I were female, I’d be outcast, because I am way too outspoken to deal with the way they treated women back then.

4 - What is your one geeky/hidden pleasure (ie - listening to polka music)?

I still sing Tiffany’s “I think we’re alone now” and Whitney’s “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” in the shower, and have a little routine I do to it and everything.

5 - As a kid what was the silliest thing you did in school (grade school/middle school)?

I got sent to the principal’s office. This boy who was digging on me saw me walking home with this girl from our class. She and I were holding hands and singing “There’s a bluebird on my shoulder…” I was in kindergarten.

  1. You’re killing me, you temptress. “Press Your Luck” is the bestest game show in the history of ever and everyone responsible for the terrible updated edition should be drug out into the street and shot. Starting with the goofy host they have. Peter Tomarken would kick his ass while Rod Roddy did play-by-play.

I also like “Russian Roulette,” but wish the questions were harder.

“Bumper Stumpers”? I remember that show. They used to air it in the afternoons on USA Network. They had a lot of cheesy game shows then. When I was sick from school, I’d watch them all.

Thanks for not considering me a chauvinistic asshole. :D

  2. Funny. I was just having a chat about Press Your Luck. Listening to people playing on ninjam and someone does the “You stopped on a Whammie” jingle. Sad part was, nobody new what I was talking about when I said “No whammies, no whammies, STOP!”. They thought I was asking them to stop playing their whammy bar. Harrumph.

  3. Big Bucks…. no whammies….. Big Bucks…. no whammies……. STOP!

    Comment by Matt — August 19, 2005 @ 11:01 am

  4. Mike - Ah, a man after my own heart! Can you believe I’ve actually met people who LIKED the new version better?! Sacrilege! I like almost all the game shows, really. I was home a lot when I was young, so I spent a lot of my time with USA Network.

Mnology - You’d be surprised how many times I can work “No whammies, no whammies, STOP!” into any given conversation ;)

Matt - “$5000 and a spin! Press your luck, or pass?”

    Comment by Jaxia — August 19, 2005 @ 12:28 pm

  5. Press your luck was okay, the whammies were great, the greed of people trying to get that last chance for the Big Bucks before the whammies strike again. But the host was so annoying it almost ruined the show!
The Best host on the best game show ever, is Gene Rayburn on Match Game!
I laugh my _______ off every time!
    Enjoyed your site!

    Comment by Peter — August 21, 2005 @ 5:53 pm

  6. I can think of one, and only one, improvement that “Whammy!” made on the original “Press Your Luck”: the Big Bank. Every dollar and prize the Whammy steals goes into the Big Bank and the contestants have a chance to hit it and therefore “Whammy the Whammy.” That’s a cool new addition.

Everything else — the new board layout, the retooled Round One, the host, the prizes, the Double Whammy, the COMMERCIAL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GAME — I can do without. Even the new 3-D Whammy isn’t nearly as charming as his kitschy 2-D ancestor.

If GSN would only go back to what made “PYL” so great, they’d have a hit on their hands. Even if I hosted.

    Especially if I hosted. :D
