Are There Rocks Ahead?

by @ 9:14 pm on March 27, 2006. Filed under Movies

When we went to Ruidoso, we decided to take a few movies with us to watch while curled up next to the fire.  Since this was a getaway, we didn’t want to take too much stuff.  Having to choose which movies to take on our trip got me to thinking about my favorite movies of all time.

The 5 Best Movies (according to Jaxia):

  1. Shawshank Redemption
  2. The Princess Bride
  3. The Sound of Music
  4. Courage Under Fire
  5. American History X

So, what are your five favorite movies?

  1. I did this awhile ago on my blog. My top are here. Or, I’ll list em again:

    5. The Usual Suspects
    4. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    3. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
    2. Braveheart
    1. Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

  2. Field of Dreams and Memento are great movies!

  3. No top movies list is complete without The Big Lebowski.

Apart from that, I tend to compartmentalize movies by genre. It’s kinda hard to compare, say, Schindler’s List with, say, Network.

Best War Movies: Braveheart, Saving Private Ryan
    Best Comedy: The Big Lebowski
Best Action: Raiders of the Lost Arc, The Matrix
Best Dramas: (tough category) Schindler’s List, Network, various others
    Best Western: Unforgiven

  4. I’ve never seen The Big Lebowski, Network, RoTLA or Unforgiven. I finally saw Schindler’s List within the last year, but I think Life is Beautiful is a better movie.

  5. In no particular order.

The lord of the rings movies (grouped as 1 movie or this would be a boring list)
    Signs
    Blackhawk down
    The Matrix
The original starwars movies (Yeah so I had another group… sue me :p )

Oh and you have never watched Raiders (oTLA)? Heathen! Its a top movie.

  6. As you can see, I still have a lot of “educating” to do when it comes to Jaxia and movies. I didn’t realize that she hadn’t seen The Big Lebowski (love it! and drank nothing but White Russians for almost a year after seeing it for the first time). Trying to get her to watch Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark has been an uphill battle so far. But I’ll keep trying! My list of persuasive techniques continues to grow … ;-)

  7. PS — No list of “Best Movies” would be complete without When Harry Met Sally. It’s my pick for the romantic comedy genre. And Parenthood is my favorite family comedy.

  8. I still love the occasional white russian. And for Jax, aconfessed computer geek, to have not seen Star Wars is pure heresy. And Unforgiven is Clint Eastwood’s best movie ever, from both a directing & an acting standpoint (and it won the best picture oscar).

  9. I still rank Naussicaa as one of my favorites, but it’s more of a nostalgia thing. And yes, I would consider it mostly a children’s movie.

I just saw Mirrormask a few weeks ago. It was incredible, I’d recomend it to anyone. Just don’t listen to some wanker who says it’s “High Fantasy”. It’s not. It’s very clearly a dreamworld, and you have to think about what the characters are representing. I’m the first to scoff at “look beyond the plot”, but in this case you really need to approach it as listening to someone describe thier dream to you. Plus, I really identified with the main character.

You’ve never seen Star Wars? Heathen. :P

And what’s wrong with a Lord of the Rings marathon session while drunk? >:D

  10. I knew Jax had not seen Star Wars, but I didn’t know she also hadn’t seen Big Lebowski or Raiders of the Lost Ark!!!

    Has she seen these:
    Blade Runner
    Mad Max
    Murderball
    From Dusk Til Dawn
    The Sting
    Old School
    Matrix
    Italian Job
    Ocean’s Eleven
    Terminator
    12 Monkeys
    Aliens
    Lost Boys.

I guess I could go on and on and on

  11. Just five? Good grief, let me think.

    In no particular order:

    Gone With the Wind
    Singin’ in the Rain
    The Sound of Music
    Star Trek: Wrath of Khan
    The Rocketeer
    Fried Green Tomatoes
    The Aristocats
    Victor/Victoria
    Some Like it Hot

I could go on and on and on…

  12. Egads! I’m so behind it’s not even funny.

Blade Runner - Harrison Ford in a sci fi movie? Oh dear.
Mad Max - I’ve see Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Does that count for anything?
Murderball - Never heard of it
From Dusk Til Dawn - Yes, sadly
The Sting - Never heard of this one, either
Old School - Or this one
Matrix - Yes! I HAVE seen this one!
Italian Job - Are you making these up?
    Ocean’s Eleven - Yes, and 12 :)
Terminator - All of them. I think I had a crush on Eddie Furlong.
    12 Monkeys - Loved it
Aliens - No, but I have seen Gorillas in the Mists
Lost Boys - I didn’t eat noodles for a long time after this one.

I’ve only seen 2 from JSS’ list: Sound of Music and Fried Green Tomatoes, although I’ve seen bits of Gone With The Wind. Never the whole thing.

And MaskedFencer’s movies were all beyond me, too.

SK is trying! I finally watched When Harry Met Sally.

  13. I even have several of those on the list from JSS. This is tragic. And she’s never even HEARD of The Sting?!? Obviously, I’ve got my work cut out for me. ;-)

  14. She need 200 pounds of popcorn, a couch, and a blanket, STAT!

    Comment by maskedfencer — March 29, 2006 @ 1:43 pm

  15. For a gambler not to have seen The Sting is like for a baseball player not to have seen The Natural.

No coincidence that both those star Robert Redford.

    Comment by Beck — March 29, 2006 @ 1:44 pm

  16. Poor SK ;)

Eww, no popcorn! Hot dog and candy, please :)

I guess I won’t mention that I haven’t seen The Natural either. Maybe I just haven’t seen many Robert Redford movies.

    Comment by Jaxia — March 30, 2006 @ 9:28 am

  17. So you haven’t seen all those classic movies and now you don’t eat popcorn?

Its not natural I tells ya!

    Comment by Tars — March 30, 2006 @ 10:49 am

  18. To add to our list of “movies to rent someday”: The Natural, Out of Africa, The Way We Were, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and Barefoot in the Park. We’ll have a Robert Redford weekend (and some eye candy with his female co-stars). :-)

    Comment by SK — March 30, 2006 @ 11:45 am

  19. Three Amigos
    Princess Bride
    The Burbs - a definite must-see.
    Butterfly Effect
    National Lampoon’s Van Wilder
