Vonage Forums

by @ 3:06 pm on . Filed under Reviews | Technology

I recently looked into signing up for VoIP phone service through Vonage. I used this Vonage forum to do my preliminary research. It was nice to have one place to keep up to date on news, and the reviews and forums had a lot of good information. Traditional landline phone service had better start making moves if they want to stay competitive in this changing market. If you are curious about VoIP, it is worth doing some more research.

Borked

by @ 10:39 am on August 29, 2006. Filed under Technology | Work

Since I’m currently job hunting, I need to spruce up my resume a bit. I never noticed it is stuck in a rut! I added my last job and it horribly borked my layout. I decided that I don’t really need a 2 page technical resume for an entry level clinical job, so I can remove some stuff. But, what do I remove?

‘Developing and maintaining technology operating budget and resource scheduling; fostering and facilitating relationships with hardware, software and VOIP partners; Developing and implementing a cost-saving process for issue management’ — That sounds pretty important, right?

‘Ensuring quality of calls by monitoring network alarms and initiating, directing, and coordinating troubleshooting activities in support of T1 data/voice services; testing performed using TBERD and Sage test sets; Designing, testing and installing more efficient wiring scheme from the point of demarcation throughout entire network, including installing and configuring racks, routers, patch panels, Crystal boxes, 65 UNIX servers and 150 DS3 lines’ — Wow, there are some big words in there. Maybe I should leave that?

And then it hit me. These offices won’t really care about any of this. Maybe I should just change my whole layout? I’ve seen those resumes that have a section with ‘relevant’ experience, but my problem is that I don’t really have any of that. I guess I will Google around for different resume layouts.

Future Nurse?

by @ 3:46 pm on August 26, 2006. Filed under Life | Nursing | School | Work

Well, I finally did it. I submitted my application for nursing school yesterday and my future as a nurse is out of my hands for the next couple of months. They will send out notification letters in mid-October. I wonder if I will have any fingernails by then?

The fall semester starts on Monday. Originally, I was going to work full time and take the semester off from school. Since I really didn’t want to get out of the studying habit, my current plan is to go to school full time and find a part time job. I’m taking Anatomy and Physiology II, Statistics, US Government and Texas Government. With the two government classes, I will qualify for an AA degree at the end of the semester.

I hate writing resumes. Right now I’m trying to tone down some of the technical stuff on my resume and then see if I can get a job in a hospital.

Getting Paid

by @ 3:29 pm on . Filed under Life

Lately, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure out how I’m going to pay for nursing school. When trying to figure out (legal) revenue streams, I asked myself, “What kind of things would I pay someone to do?”

- Manage my money: Maybe it seems odd, but I would love to have someone manage my money and put me on a budget. I’ve tried so many times to make myself stick to a budget, but I’m too good at talking myself into breaking it … ‘just this once.’

- Clean house: I am not a good housekeeper. For some reasons, my eyes just never notice the dust bunnies.

- Maintain my car: I never wanted to learn the ins and outs of mechanical work. Plus, I don’t like getting grease under my nails!

So, I’m willing to pay people to do those things (there are plenty more, but that’s a good place to start). The nice thing is that there are companies who think people should Get Paid For Blogging. That’s not such a bad thing :)

Like Better

by @ 3:27 pm on August 24, 2006. Filed under Entertainment | Geek | Technology

LikeBetter is a fun website. It’s figured out that my desk is messy, I’m right handed and several other things. I just wish it had a feature where I could look back at all the assumptions it made about me, and how many of them were right.

Are you like me?

How well do you know me?

What do they think they know about you? If you create a profile, be sure to post a link so I can take the quizzes on you!

TV Roundup

by @ 7:37 pm on August 20, 2006. Filed under Entertainment | Television | UFC

So You Think You Can Dance — I’m going to miss this show. I didn’t watch the first season, but I really got into it this year. Travis was the best technical dancer, but ya gotta give it to Benji — he was the most entertaining to watch. I hope they add a tour stop near us because I would love to see the show.

The fourth season of Ultimate Fighter is here. Yay! I’m still really excited about the show this year. Who would have thought that Matt Serra would be in Shonie Carter’s corner? But I don’t know who they had judging that first fight. It must have been Shonie Carter’s birthday because the judges gave him that fight. At best, the fight with Rich Clementi was a draw and should have had another round.

Being An Adult

by @ 11:58 am on August 15, 2006. Filed under Life | Nursing | School

I had always planned to work during the fall semester, but now I’m not so sure that is the best idea.  I’m worried that I will lose my motivation for school because I won’t have the school mentality anymore.  I tend to start off strong, but I always seem to come up short when it gets down to it.  I’ve never been good at following through with things.  I don’t want that to happen.  I would really like to actually finish something for once in my life.  Something I can take pride in because I didn’t take the easy way out.

But, there’s something to be said for paying the bills!  Being an adult and accepting responsibility sure gets in the way sometimes.

10 Minutes

by @ 1:44 pm on August 9, 2006. Filed under Auto | Life

As you may have noticed, I haven’t written much here lately that is very personal. Things have been pretty hectic, but I can sum it up by showing you a 10 minute window into my day yesterday:

5:15p - Talking on the phone to my sister, she says “SK should be home soon, right?” “She doesn’t usually get home until around 6p.” Something clicks in my head and I start cursing. “Oh crap, I have to go! We are babysitting tonight, and I am supposed to meet her at her sister’s house at 6p!

5:16p - Rush to the bathroom, take a swig of mouthwash. Dash into my closet and throw on some clothes. Stop back in the bathroom long enough to spit, put on some deodorant and put my hair in a ponytail. Put Toby away and slip on my shoes.

5:19p - Run out the door to my car, locking the door behind me. While attempting to get in the car, I realize that I don’t have my keys. And now the door is locked.

5:21p - Remember the secret, get in the house, grab my keys and get in my car. After starting the car, I’m greeted with the low fuel light.

5:22p - Stop to get gas. It takes 15.92 gallons to fill up my 16 gallon tank. I definitely did not have enough gas to make it there.

5:25p - While attempting to get on the freeway, I stop to yield the right-of-way to the car on the feeder (aka access road for those of you who didn’t grow up in Houston).

5:25:30p - Jolted suddenly forward, as I am rear-ended by the guy behind me.

Yep, I was rear-ended. And that’s just a 10 minute window into my life.
